The Ear Probably Itched・きっと耳が痒かったのだ

 

A story of The Earmouse.

「二者択一」

オレンジの皮と棄てられたティッシュの山がガサゴソと揺れる。ミミネズミは黄色いゴミ袋の中をかき回していた。

食べ残しには見向きもしないので、何を探していたのか、そもそも探す物なんてあったのか、それとも単にゴミで耳を掻こうしただけなのかさえ明確ではなかった。

きっと耳が痒かったのだ。

「性的欲求に関して、創造作用は、多と一との矛盾的自己同一的世界が、自己自身の中に自己を表現するということにほかならない」西田先生は振り返る。ある種のミラーメカニズムだ。

何らかの相互理解を得ることが可能でなければならなかった。コミュニケーションの基本形態。人間の弱点に対する防壁がその最大の意味であった。

先生はぼんやりと外を眺めていた。丁度その時、奇しくも、若いイノシシが構内を走る幹線道路下の小さなトンネルへと入って行った。呑気なやつめ、「水素ステーション」や「水素エネルギー国際研究センター」などというの最先端研究施設のことを忘れ去ったようだ。

はい、または、いいえ、二者択一。それこそが無限の多様性、ひいては無限に複雑になり得るメッセージを、つなぎ合わせる核たるものなのだ。

先生は、ミミネズミがどちらか一方を選択し意見を表明できるよう、文字Ｔ形の単純な迷路を設計した。

是ならば左へ、非ならば右へ。

完璧なデザインのはずだった。しかし、この愚かな生物は眠りこけた。

[Binary Choice]

The pile of orange peels and discarded tissues wriggled as the earmouse rummaged through the trash inside the yellow bag. 

As it didn’t glance at the leftover food, it wasn’t clear what it was looking for, or whether it was even looking for something, or just trying to rub its ear against the trash. 

The ear probably itched. 

“In terms of sexual desire, the creative process comes down to nothing other than the notion that the world, with its contradictory self-identity of the many and the one, expresses itself within itself,” reflected Dr. Nishida. Some sort of mirror mechanism.

It had to be possible to gain some kind of mutual understanding. An elementary form of communication. It would be in its most significant sense a bulwark against human weakness. 

The Doctor was gazing vacantly outside. Curiously, just then, a young wild boar entered the small tunnel underneath the main road that runs along the premises. Lucky one. It happily left behind all thoughts of cutting-edge research facilities like “Hydrogen Station” and “International Research Center for Hydraulic Energy.” 

Yes or no, a binary choice. That was all that was needed to string together an infinite variety, an infinite complexity, of messages. 

The Doctor came up with a simple maze in the shape of the letter T, so the earmouse should be able to express its opinion by choosing one or the other direction. 

For yes, to the left, for no, to the right. 

The design was perfect, but the stupid creature fell asleep.
