Why Had the Earmouse Disappeared・なぜミミネズミは姿を消したのか

 

A story of The Earmouse.

「水に流す」

ロープが落ちる。そしてまた落ちる。

ヘッドフォンを装着した作業員二人組が魅せる匠の窓拭きは、強烈な静寂と徹底的に拭く振り付けとともに、奇妙な音響効果を繰り出した。正しく、職人芸だ。

西田先生は、洗車中の車内に居るのに似た、研究室が圧縮されているという感覚に陥った。

彼は、ミミネズミがよく座っていた場所を一瞥した。

「愛するということは、自己が自己を越えることである、自己が自己の外に出ることである。しかも逆に、愛される物が自己となること、我々が愛する物が我々の自己を限定することである」と悲しい哲学者は考えた。

彼は、あの小さな友人を慕った。なぜミミネズミは姿を消したのか。

ヌードマウスを耳でつかんで強制的に迷路に押し込んだのは、確かに意地悪だった。きっと、たぶん、それは本当に悪かった。

しかし、ノンフィクション、つまり絶対的、無限、未編集の真実は、無意味に終わってしまう。意味とは、フィクションに住んでいる。そこにこそ、信念が生まれるのである（または少なくとも、不信の自発的停止だ）。

あの厄介な事件は何週間も前のことであり、神経質な鼠族はすぐさま彼を噛んで仕返しした。

なぜミミネズミはこれを水に流すことができなかったのか。心は苦難に対して鋼鉄の如くでは有り得ない。

そろそろ、先生の良心を少し信じてやってもいいころだったのに。

[Let Bygones Be Bygones] 

A rope falls. And another rope falls. 

The art of window cleaning, as performed by two workers wearing headphones, produced strange sound effects, with a choreography of intense silence and thorough wiping. It was true craftsmanship.

Similar to the sensation inside a car during a carwash, Dr. Nishida got the impression his office was being compressed. 

He glanced at the place where the earmouse usually sat. 

“To love means that the self transcends itself, that the self goes out of itself. And yet, conversely, the thing being loved is what becomes the self, the things we love define our limits,” reflected the sad philosopher. 

He longed for his little friend. Why had the earmouse disappeared?  

Surely probably he’d been wrong to grab the nude mouse by the ear and forcibly put it in the maze. Surely maybe, he’d really been wrong.

But nonfiction, that is, the absolute, infinite, unedited truth ends up being meaningless. Meaning lives in fiction. That’s where belief comes in (or at least the willing suspension of disbelief).  

The troubling incident was several weeks ago, and at the time the nervous rodent immediately took revenge biting him. 

Why couldn’t the earmouse let bygones be bygones? The heart cannot be like steel against hardship.

It was about time to have a bit of belief in the Doctor’s good nature.
